Joey Caretti is an 11 year old boy who recently battled a very rare brain cancer. He rang the bell on 11-11-11 to symbolize the end of chemo. He and his family were elated. Friends cheered!
Then the bubble burst when over the next few weeks Joey got weaker and grew very tired. Testing and a biopsy show that he now has a second cancer - leukemia. The drug that would normally be used to kill this cancer in children cannot be used because it was already administered for the brain cancer. Joey now faces more chemo and a bone marrow transplant.
We want to put a smile on this young man's face and we think 1000 (or more!) get well cards can do it!
If you're up to the challenge, here's the plan:
Get a card or even just use a piece of paper and add a hand written note to Joey with a few words of encouragement!
Mail it to: Joey Caretti c/o 22671 Eddy Drive, Macomb, MI 48044. This is not Joey's address. The plan is to collect all of the cards and deliver them in a big sack, unopened, to Joey -- picture the courthouse scene from Miracle on 34th Street.
Spread the word! We would love to see Joey get cards from all over the country, even the world. If you know someone you can contact out of state or out of the country, ask them to send a card.
Cards should be mailed ASAP!!!
Ideas to grow the list of senders:
Are you associated with or do you work at a school? Get all of the kids to make a card or write a note and send them all in one package to us.
Are you in a club or group that can send cards?
Do you work in an office? Print off this information and get all of your coworkers to send a card.
Share this note with your family and friends via email or on Facebook and ask them to send cards.
This will be incredibly therapeutic for Joey, as well as his twin sister Maggie, big brother Richard and his parents, Lisa and Joe. It will take hours of sitting together to see where they all came from, open them and share the messages.
In addition to sending a card, please keep Joey in your thoughts and prayers for strength and healing.
We'll keep you posted out here as the cards start coming in.
