Penny for your thoughts

Why do you have to "put your two cents in".. But it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to? And why is it always specifically one penny or two? What if I want more for my thoughts?
It's a sad concept, but I like The Band Perry's lyrics, "A penny for your thoughts, Oh no, I'll sell them for a dollar. They're worth so much more after I'm a gonner."
Where did this phrase originate? Well, just before the 16th century, John Heywood was born. He became an author of multiple poems and a book. In one of his works he penned, "Penny for your thoughts?" Some of the articles that I've read pointed out that he may not have come up with the phrase, but he is credited for it because he was the first one to put it to paper.
What stinks is that you hardly ever get the penny offered you...
